| Westbrook,
founded in 1648, is a small shoreline community
located 50 miles from Hartford, 98 miles from New
York and 102 miles from Boston. Originally known
as Pochoug, an Indian name meaning "at the
confluence of two rivers". The town covers
approximately 15.72 square miles and as of the 2001
statistics holds a population of 6,372. Westbrook
is situated between Old Saybrook and Clinton, extending
four miles along the shore. Westbrook is the birthplace
of David Bushnell, the Revolutionary War Patriot
who is recognized by the United State Navy as the
inventor of the submarine. |
