This house was built
in 1767 by William Hart, Jr. for his bride, Esther
Buckingham. Hart served in the Revolutionary War and
reached the rank of General.
The house features much
of its original architecture typical twelve over twelve
windows, center hallway and twin chimneys, unique
that they are also corner chimneys, one at each gable
end of the house. The two chimneys serve eight inerior
fireplaces, unusual for this period in Connecticut.
The interior has wide floor boards, old wainscoting,
and paneling. The house has been restored to its original
authenticity by the Old Saybrook Historical Society,
which uses it as a headquarters and museum. |
