| The
town of Branford is located east of New Haven on
the Long Island Sound in the south central area
of the state. In the year 2001 Branford is home
to approximately 28,761
residents. Branford was first settled in 1644 by
families from Wethersfield. Branford became Connecticut's
twenty seventh town in 1685 when it gained independence
from the New Haven Colony.
Branford
covers 27.9 square miles with a long shoreline.
Branford's beaches include; Double Beach, Hotchkiss
Grove, Indian Neck, Limewood Beach, Stony Creek,
and Short Beach. Branford has over 17 yacht clubs
and marinas along its shore. Just off the shore
are the Thimble Islands, 23 of the islands are inhabited.
The islands range in size from less than a half
acre to twelve acres of land. It is rumored Captain
Kidd visited the islands and left some hidden treasures.
Daily cruises of the Thimble Islands are available
from the docks in Stony Creek.
Branford
Green and town center offer a variety of boutiques,
restaurants and history. Blackstone Memorial Library
was dedicated in 1896 by Timothy Beach Blackstone,
who was born in Branford in 1829. The Library designs
were taken from the Erechtheum on the Acropolis
in Athens, which is evident as you view the marble
entries, pillars and dome structure. On the opposite
end of the Green is a commemorative monument in
honor of the meeting at Reverend Samuel Russell's
house where Yale College was planned in 1701.
Branford
is continuing to improve the already beautiful Green
and town center. |
